  6.          Statement of Purpose of the ASP:
  7.  
  8.          The ASP is an association for shareware authors with the general
  9.          goals of educating the authors, the shareware distributors and the 
  10.          public, setting standards, sharing resources and information among 
  11.          members and any other goals which the majority of the membership 
  12.          might think appropriate.
  13.  
  14.          Definition of "Shareware":
  15.  
  16.          For the ASP's purposes, "Shareware" is software which meets the
  17.          following general criteria:
  18.  
  19.          - It is a "complete" program, ie: it performs all of the major
  20.            functions normally expected of a program of its type, unlike a
  21.            "commercial demo" which normally has a major function disabled.
  22.            (The distinction is sometimes a judgement call, and the ASP will
  23.            have a procedure for arriving at such a judgement if necessary.)

  25.          - It is copyrighted (as opposed to uncopyrighted software which is
  26.            "public domain").
  27.  
  28.          - It may be copied for others to try out, subject to copying
  29.            restrictions which the author may or may not choose to require,
  30.            such as the following:

  32.            - Registration fees may be required from the user as a condition
  33.              of continued use of the program beyond a trial usage period.
  34.              Not requiring such a fee or requiring fees only from specific
  35.              types of users, such as businesses and government, but not
  36.              individuals, does not disqualify a program from being
  37.              considered "shareware".

  39.            - Compliance with specified standards may be required from
  40.              anyone copying the program for a fee or in conjunction with
  41.              any business enterprise.

  43.          Membership Criteria:
  44.  
  45.          Membership is open to programmers who are authors of at least one
  46.          "non-trivial" program (in the judgement of a Membership Committee)
  47.          which is currently marketed and supported as shareware, who agree
  48.          to abide by standards adopted by the association, and whose mem-
  49.          bership, in the judgement of the Membership Committee, will not be
  50.          detrimental to the goals or reputation of the ASP.

  52.          Access to CompuServe is not required, but it is anticipated that
  53.          this is where much of the decision-making process will take place
  54.          because of relative ease of access. We encourage those who do not
  55.          wish to use CompuServe or cannot get access to it to join the ASP
  56.          anyway.  Communication will also be accomplished via newsletters
  57.          and possibly by other means.

  59.          Membership Dues:
  60.  
  61.          The ASP has annual membership dues.  These are currently $50.00 per
  62.          year, pro rated to the quarter the applicant is accepted for member-
  63.          ship.

  65.          Mailing List Option:
  66.  
  67.          The ASP intends to provides mailing lists to outsiders.  The mailing
  68.          list provided as labels and not in electronic form shall be provided
  69.          by whoever is keeping the official ASP membership list (currently
  70.          the Secretary).  The list shall consist solely of names and
  71.          addresses and not phone numbers.

  73.          Members shall have the option of being included in the mailing list
  74.          or not as follows:  Your name will be included on this list UNLESS
  75.          you indicate that you do not want it included by checking the box on
  76.          the application.

  78.          At any time, any member may change their include/exclude status by
  79.          notifying the keeper of the list in writing or via easyplex.
